The tree itself is fairly irregular in appearance; the 12 to 20 inch-long, coarse, deciduous leaves bunch just at the tips of the harsh, obtuse, frankfurter like, thick, dark green branches. Branches are upright and fairly swarmed on the storage compartment framing a vase or umbrella shape with age.They are somewhat delicate and fragile and can break however are generally solid unless they are mechanically hit or bothered. The crown loses its leaves for a brief span amid the winter showing the coarse-textured, thickset branches. A smooth sap is oozed from the branches when they are wounded .
